Tips to Stay Sane and Healthy While Working from Home

The Coronavirus pandemic has changed life as we knew it— Social distancing and working from home have become part of ‘the new normal.’ While it may have seemed exciting at first to work in pajamas, remote working has started to feel isolating and mentally draining.

Here’s how you can maintain your sanity through it all:

Create a Time and Space for Work

When a working individual is at home 24/7, it can be hard to flip the switch and get into ‘work mode.’ This is why it’s important to have a dedicated space or a home office that you use just for business.

Similarly, stick to a schedule if possible and don’t work past those hours. Communicate these arrangements to the rest of the family so that they can stay out of the way. This will help create some semblance of order and balance, and help you segregate home and work life.

Have a To-Do List

It’s easy to get distracted when one is working from home, especially during this pandemic. A plan will help to get things done and be productive.

Take some time at the start of each day to determine which tasks need to be completed and when. You could either create a rigorous schedule or have a general to-do list, but either way, commit to getting them all done.

Working from home gives you the freedom to plan as per the strengths, so use it wisely. If you’re a morning person, finish critical tasks first and then move on to boring admin stuff or emails.

Conversely, if you don’t really wake up until the afternoon, keep the important duties for later in the day. Don’t forget to take breaks at some point as well.

Adjust Expectations

These are hard times for everyone, especially those who are at home with many family members. With conflicting schedules, lack of space, added responsibilities, and increased anxiety, one may not always be able to perform well.

Understand that your other coworkers are also in a less than ideal situation, so be generous with deadlines and overlook kids or barking dogs during video calls. In fact, try to laugh it off, so you feel at peace. We’re all doing the best we can.

Sleep Well

With everything that’s going around us, it’s easy to forget the one thing that matters most – sleep. Make sure to get at least 8-10 hours of sleep every night. It improves one’s state of mind and increases productivity as well as immunity.

Switch off the phone or put it on silent, close the laptop, disable push notifications, and take some time to unwind before getting a good night’s rest.

The current situation isn’t ideal, but that doesn’t mean remote working can’t be productive or fulfilling. Set a routine, say no to distractions, and prioritize work-life balance for a sane and healthy work from home experience.
